BRAHMAGUPTA was a mathematician from India and was born in 598 AD. He was a very clever astronomer; that means he knew lots and lots about how the planets were made and how they move. Brahmagupta was also the very first person to use a zero – this is a zero 0 – in a sum!

### RENE’ DESCARTES

RENE’ DESCARTES was a mathematician from France and he was born in 1596 AD. He could write sums that look like codes and are called algebra. People who understand these codes can use them to design shapes! If you want to say Rene’ Descartes’ name out loud you would say it like this. REN-A DER-CART.

### LEONHARD EULER

LEONHARD EULER was a mathematician who was born in Switzerland in 1707. He was very good at showing how to use graphs in maths and in helping people build mechanical things! He wrote so many books that if you put them all together they could almost fill a whole room!

### PYTHAGORAS

PYTHAGORAS was a mathematician from Greece and was born a very long time ago in 570 BC. Do you know what BC means? Pythagoras was born on an island called Samos. Some people say Pythagoras discovered the best sum to find out how long is the longest side of a right angle triangle. If you don’t know what a right angle triangle is I’m sure you can find out!

### EUCLID OF ALEXANDRIA

EUCLID OF ALEXANDRIA was a Mathematician who was born in 300 BC in Ancient Greece. People called him ‘The Father of Geometry’ – that’s shapes! He wrote a book called ‘ELEMENTS’ and lots of other people who love maths say it’s one of their favourite books! In the Greek language Euclid’s name means ‘Good Glory’!
